Title:
Amareleja Solar power station
Amareleja Solar power station
Description:
Apr. 2, 2009 - Amareleja, Moura, Portugal - Huge solar panels stand at the AMPER Amareleja Solar power station, operated by Acciona Sa, considered the one that produces more energy than any other plant in the world, while they receive the sun rays to produce electrical power for over 30,000 Portuguese homes in the region. Located at the south-east of Portugal, 250km from the capital Lisbon, near the Spanish border, the station was built in a region affected by desertification and unemployment, traditionally an agricultural area of wide plains and considered the hottest place of the portuguese country, with temperatures getting up to almost 48ºC during the summer. In a region for long affected by the dry climate, farming becomes more and more difficult and this area is now being tested to become the most renewable energy production place in Europe. Portugal is even expecting to boost the internal energy consumption from renewable energy sources from 45% to 60% by 2020. For this, solar plants like the Amareleja or even the Serpa Solar plant, and aeolic parks all over the country and huge dams like the Alqueva, are part of these plans for clean and greener energy reducing dependence on oil, other non-renewable energy sources and even avoiding going towards nuclear to meet the demands of the internal consumption.
