Title:
Bruniquel - french medieval village
Bruniquel - french medieval village
Description:
Jul 16, 2009 - Bruniquel, France - A couple sits outside of a restaurant at Bruniquel village main plazza "Place de Horloge". Bruniquel is small picturesque fortified medieval village, located on the outskirts of Montauban, Southwest of France. The village, with about 560 inhabitants stands 250 meters ASL near the river Averyron. Characterized by the narrow streets with stone-made houses, picturesque wooden windows, medieval gateways, defensive walls and a 12th century castle, has been considered one of the most beautiful villages of France. The castle was built on the ruins of an earlier fortress said to have been founded by Queen Brunehaut in the 6th century. It was the home of William of Tudela who wrote the first part of La Chanson de la Croisade Albigeoise, an account of the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars. Since 1997 the castles have been the venue of an annual arts festival celebrating the works of Jacques Offenbach, usually on every August. The village and its surroundings feature in the 1975 film Le Vieux Fusil (The Old Rifle) directed by Robert Enrico starring Romy Schneider and Philippe Noiret.
